Do You Deserve Your Books?

Do you know how much your book reading habits give away your personality? According to Judi James (body language expert and author of The You Code: What Your Habits Say About You), it's not just what you read, but how you read.

The Peeker
You prise each page open carefully, peeking at its contents without breaking the spine. A book read by The Peeker looks pristine. Peekers are timid, polite and thoughtful of others. For you a book is an heirloom, something to be read and then passed on, stored or sold on eBay.

The Finger Licker
You are “devouring” your book and your attitude to life and relationships can be the same. This gesture is also controlling as the lick means no page will escape your grasp. You are controlled, controlling and vaguely superior. You have a sense of steady pace as you make your way through life.

I just love, love, love this photo

The Crusher
You trash a book as you read. You break spines, bend corners and fold it open. You devour information quickly, have a short attention span and, if you don’t enjoy what you’re reading, will cut yourself off with a ruthlessness that can be scary. Spontaneous to the point of scatty, you can appear kind and friendly but your overall approach to life is focused on your needs, not the feelings of others.

The Page Folder
Practical but timid, you turn one small corner back to keep your place. This tiny act of rebellion is driven by necessity because you love books so much you will carry one everywhere and be terrified of losing the plot (literally). You’re also showing a liking for possession and ownership that suggests you’re allergic to sharing.

The Hopper
You prefer to hop and flick your way through a book, even sneaking a look at the last pages before starting. For you, discovering how a book ends is necessary knowledge before devoting your time and effort to read it. The question: “Is this worth it?” tends to dominate your life. This negative approach to risk means you miss out on surprises.

Strangely, I'm a mixture - a bit of a hopper (just have to read the ending first, although I'll usually still persevere to the end even if I hate it), mixed with a peeker. If it's something I know I won't be passing on to the local charity shop or a friend, I can quite happily then be a crusher. What the hell does this say about me?

And then what about those of us who mostly use ebooks! Are we judged by how many fingerprints are on our screens or debris under the keyboards (and that's completely omitting what might be found after finishing a one-handed read).

And so in a completely non-judgemental manner and to celebrate World Book Day today, we'd love to give away an AllRomance voucher worth $10. To enter, just comment below and let us know if you're a Peeker or a Crusher, a Page Folder, Hopper or Finger Licker - it's as simple as that!

Please leave your email address (or if you prefer, email it to Jase & I at happinessisshy@yahoo.com). Draw will be 7pm EST on the 5th March.

  2. I am a mix too. :) A hopper with a pinch of peeper and a huge slog of crusher.

  3. Pristine. Any new paper books I buy look no different after I read them. I used to break spines, but if I wanted to borrow books from my brother, I had to keep them immaculate, so...

Back when I bought paper books, I bought lots of them used and was fine with broken spines, etc.

  4. I fall somewhere between the page folder and the crusher.

I have always been careful with other people's books, but with my own, not so much. Ebooks were made for people like me. :)

  5. Definitely a peeker! I love my books to look pristine. I get sad when one of my books starts looking poor. =[

  6. Total hopper and finger licker. Devour every single word, but not necessarily in order and the more the better.

  7. It really depends. If it's a book that I've been looking forward to i'm totally The peeker. Im a huge book rat so if I find a book I like i will probably read it over and over again until i'm ready to store it on a shelf or give it away so i try to keep my books in really good condition.

OR! If its a book I know nothing about, I'm a total Hooper. I like to read the last page. No matter how long or short.

and oh lord don't get me started on ebooks! Ive been totally holding out on getting an e-reader and all that jive but ever since I started reading m/m its really hard to find books i desperately want to read in paperback. And when i do buy the paper backs it's usually an expensive book which kinda evens out w/ amazon's free shipping =p

So I've recently given up on my crusade against e-books because it just cant be help *sigh* So my iphone (because i dont have a "real" e-reader) has totally been getting a work out.

  8. Most books I come across I'm a peeker with a little hopper thrown in (although I won't ever read the end, but sometimes I just need to know if a character I like will be back so I flip ahead until I see his name again). When I lend my books it comes with a frantic list of instructions and please don'ts attached to it.

Now with books I love and reread a lot... I have no intention of sharing them with anyone and I am a finger licking crusher. I mark pages so I can find my favorite scenes or scene that I always go back to of whatever. With ebooks, I do this with every book, I tab and highlight any book that I really enjoy and sometimes I'll just flip to those parts because they are funny/awesome/sad... whatever.

So I guess I have my public book persona and my secret hidden book persona. Or really rules for books I share and rules for books that are just mine. Either way, I have no idea what that says about me.

  9. I can be both a crusher and a hopper depending how the stories flow. If it cant catch my attention, hopped I go to the ending and then crush off the book from my bookshelf.

  11. i'm a misture of hopper and peeker. i will actually hop to the end and read the last few pages first then go back and start at the beginning but through it all i never want to harm the books all my books look as though they haven't been read even though i've read them all at least 4 or 5 times.

  12. I'd say I can be all of them at some point depending on my mood but a majority of the time I'm a mix between a hopper, page folder and finger licker. I take my kindle with me everywhere and I definitely have a problem with sharing any of my books, I tend to skip to the end a lot but I also have to read every single little word. Lol.

  13. I'm such a mix it's not even funny. I'm the page folder since I can't leave the house without carrying a book with me. But I don't actually turn the corner since I'm also the peeker. Unfortunately no matter how much I try when a book sweeps me along I tend to turn into the crusher. And finally, we come to the hopper. Yes, it's a horrible habit but a lot of the time it get's the better of me and I skip to the end to see what happens. So there you have it.

  18. I am also a mixed reader. The page folder as I am very possessive of my books and kindle and don't trust anyone take care of them as I can. I am also a finger licker. I do devour books and I hate to stop reading a story. Lastly, I am also a peeker. I keep and store all my favorite books and after 40 years of reading, that's a lot of totes!! I love ebooks, much easier to store!!!

  19. I'm a Peeker - spines on my new-bought books are never broken! Although, oddly, the description for the Finger Licker fits me to a T though I have NEVER licked my finger to turn a page in my life! What does that say about me?? :-)

  21. Hi!
I'm definitely a peeker. Paperbacks and hardcovers from international publishers/booksellers in my country is entirely too expensive. Every paper or slim back is precious. The rare Gay paperbacks I bring in is literally pure gold in value- especially when my country customs processed it as if it's a bomb threat and taxed me hell.

Not that I would sell my precious'es away , my childhood paperbacks of Sweet Valleys is in tatters and broken spines when I was in the page folder stage that it's positively ugly to display, so I't was a hard but needed 'habit' to correct (for me at least.)
Drive's my Daddy deaarest batty tho. He insist books are meant to be 'broken' for that is their 'duty' Every magazine/books HE buy he would FOLD the pages one by one along the spine just to watch me shudder.
    *Shudder*
Well. All the more reason to keep my preciousssss $40+ ghey paperbacks away from him lol.

Would love to enter if possible. Thank You kindly for throwing in this juicy bone~

  22. I'm a total finger licker. I care too much about a book to be a crusher but also feel like a book has to feel read after I'm done or I haven't done it justice so I'm not a peeker either.

  23. Oh I'm inbetween three -
Peeker: don't laugh, but I cover my paperbacks with clear contact so that when I lend them out they don't get too battered!
Crusher: of late I've been easily distracted with my reading, mainly because of my computer & GRs!!
Page Folder: I always carry a book with me -not to work but everywhere else, I hate not having one in my bag!
Love the pictures, hmm yummy! Thanks Juni & Jase:)

  24. I'm a mix between a peeker and a folder. When I lend books out and they come back bent and the spine is broken, I feel like it's a personal betrayal. Like how you treat my books is a direct reflection of how you care about me and my feelings. Hence, I don't lend books often anymore and I usually buy ebooks now and they can't be trashed.

  25. (I entered earlier on but I didn't see my comment published. Sorry if this is a double post then :) )
    Hi!
I'm definitely a peeker as where I'm from, international published books is expensive enough to literally exchange it for gold. Once, I ordered a tame gay paperback (barely R 16 even) and it was treated like a terrorist plot of nuclear proportions by my country customs department and the book's final price tag was $USD 40. *facepalm*

Not that I'm keeping my precious books pristine because it could potentially send my kids to college later, but because they are entirely too gorgeous to be broken. I have this (probably psychotic) belief that once a paperback book spine is broken, its spirit would be broken. For it just hasten it demise with future loose bindings and lost pages D:.

It irritates my Daddy Dearest to no end. He believes that it's the book inherent duty to be spine broken and once bought he would relish folding down each page to the paperback spine just to see me shudder (and internally weep). *shudders*

Whelp. More the reason for me to keep my precious 'lil rainbow books hidden~

Would love to enter this contest and I solemnly promise that the prize voucher would be frugally used on many ebooks. :)
Thank You and much Love for organizing this~
